Some Important Hacks to Smartly Use Local Transport in Big Tourist Cities Overseas.

When it comes to cheaper commutes within the city, there is not a greater match than local transport like buses or metro trains. This is the best way to travel comfortably without spending extra bucks. Usually, all big cities have a local transport system and it is easily managed by a single city card that can be loaded with balance.

For example. In Dubai, taxis charge you around 500 PKR/km. It is extremely expensive. The cheaper alternative is Dubai Metro which covers 80% of Dubai's main spots. Nol Card or Dubai Card can be bought at any station and can be charged with local currency. It charges you around 400 PKR one time for up to 20 km. The same card can be used for local buses and water ferries as well. Istanbul has Istanbul Card, similarly, Baku has Baku Card. All major tourist attractions are covered by local transport and a little bit of walk.

For travelling to a different city, try to avoid domestic flights. Use buses, trains and ferries instead. For example, in Türkiye, it takes up to 8 hours to reach Konya from Istanbul by bus which is around 7,000 PKR. Flight charges you around 17,000 PKR. But a fast train cost you around 5,000 PKR In a business class lounge and will take you there in 4.5 hours only. This is an excellent website when it comes to travel options between 2 cities across the globe.

In some rare cases, taxis are cheap and affordable in some cities like Baku. A taxi app named Bolt will charge you around 50 PKR/km which is nothing when compared to other parts of the world. So, travel smart and look for all your options!

A big thanks to Google Maps which has made our life easier. While using Maps, use the option below to see all travel options that can be done on local transport. This option is not available in offline maps. You will always need the internet to use this.

Lastly, I want to mention hitchhiking. It is very popular among travellers who have time and do not hesitate to jump on a cola truck in the middle of the road for free. Yes! All you need is a Card and a Pen to write the name of the destination you are heading to. Take the signboard and stand on the road that is leading to that destination. If you are lucky and creative enough, you might get a ride for free. But don't complain if you have to stand with the cows for the next 2 hours :D This is safe and full of adventure. It is usually recommended for solo travellers at day time.

One hour free ride for us! With Just a Thumb and some Courage to Ask :D
